Puppies' Business – Enzo the Pug

Enzo was presented to our surgery because he vomited permanently for last two days. Enzo's owners are our long standing clients and they are great animal lovers. Ten days ago they saw Enzo ate a baby teat but they also saw the baby teat in Enco's faeces two days afterwards.

Clinical examination didn't reveal any dramatic findings. Enzo was more quite then usual and he showed signs of discomfort during the palpation of his abdomen.

The first diagnosis was a Gastritis caused by irritation with a foreign body – baby teat which Enzo swallowed and defecated few days ago. Treatment for acute gastritis was introduced.

On a check-up Enzo was slightly better and the treatment was continued.

During the follow-up, Enzo was examined again and the discomfort during the palpation of his abdomen was still present. No other problems were discovered. We decided to perform an x-ray examination to get some more information of Enzo's abdominal organs.

A serious suspicion of another foreign body presented in Enzo's abdomen, most likely in small intestines, was established after we saw the x-ray films.

Together with Enzo's owners we decided to perform a diagnostic surgical procedure and to remove the problem if possible.

During the surgical procedure another baby teat was removed from Enzo's small intestine. Later we found out that Enzo swallowed another baby teat four days after the first one.

Enzo has gone through the standard postoperative procedure and after ten days he was completely recovered. We only hope that more puppy toys and less babies' accessories would be in his surroundings in the future.
