Eye Injury - An Emergency Case
Six years old Pekinese dog "Djura" was presented to our surgery after dog fight. Routine clinical examination did not reveal any life-threatening conditions but very obvious and very serious was a condition of his left eye. "Djura" had already had the same eye injured few months ago but this time the injury was more dangerous and the emergency treatment was necessary.

"Djura" was diagnosed with Descementocele. The Descementocele is a condition which occurs after deep injury of the eye. Structures from within the eye protrude on the surface of the affected eye. If the treatment is not adequate or on time permanent loss of the eye is a possible consequence.
"Djura" was prepared for an emergency surgery. Standard medical protocol for an eye surgery was used. The appropriate choice of the anaesthetic agents is of a vital importance. The important role of the anaesthetic agents during the eye surgery is to prevent any eye movement.
After "Djura" was anaesthetised we examined the injured eye again. Because of the size of the defect we decided to perform complicated surgical procedure where eye conjunctiva is transplanted over the defect. This procedure is called 360 conjunctival flap.

The surgery was completed successfully and the postoperative treatment was discussed with the owner. The owner was instructed how to apply local treatment in "Djura's" eye and how to prevent him of disturbing the surgical wound and the healing process. "Djura" was checked regularly.
After almost five weeks of medical treatment Djura was discharged from our surgery. Both Djura's eye and the vision of the affected eye were preserved. Five weeks of patience paid off at the end.
