Besi the Poodle
A 13 year old female poodle called Besi was brought to our surgery because she had very bad breath and her teeth had changed in appearance. Besi also bled from her mouth occasionally. She drooled a lot and was not eating well.
General clinical examination revaled that Besi's teeth were in very poor condition. There was a large amount of tartar accumulated on her teeth. Her gums were red, inflammed and painful.
On auscultation of her thoracic cavity we discovered that Besi had a heart murmor which was better heard on her left side. It was a 3/6 degree murmur. The lungs sounded normal.
Although Besi didn't have any signs of heart disease we decided to perform an x-ray examination of the thoracic cavity to get some additional information on the condition of her heart. On the x-ray film we discovered her heart was slightly enlarged. There were no other pathological changes. We explained to the owners that Besi would need regular check ups for her heart but that she could go through gas anaesthesia.
Besi had undergone preoperative medical preparation and she was put on i/v fluids. Both induction of her anaesthesia and the gas anaesthesia went smoothly without complications, Nevertheless, she was carefully monitored throughout the whole procedure.
It is clearly seen on the picture that Besi's teeth were in very poor condition. There was gross tartar accumulation and lots of teeth were damaged. Also there were ulcerations on the gums. These pathological changes within the oral cavity were a serious threat for Besi's health. Dental plaque is full of bacteria which is a permanent source of the infection for the animal. We performed extensive ultrasonic scaling of Besi's teeth.
All the affected teeth were extracted (14 teeth) and the remaining healthy teeth were polished.
Besi recovered well and we discussed the importance of every day dental hygiene with the owners. The procedure that we performed is only a temporary solution for Besi. Tartar will accumulate again if the owners do not follow our instuctions regarding dental hygiene. Dental hygiene consists of regular washing, massaging, brushing and cleaning of the teeth and gums.
From now on Besi will require 6 monthly rechecks for us to monitor the condition of both her oral cavity and heart.
